Astonishing Snail History by Balazs Hardi (© 2006)

There are tons of astonishing facts and fictions about snails all around the world. Most of us know almost nothing about the present snail history and absolutely nothing about their past. I, as a professional snail history expert, answer thousands of questions about snails every year. I collected few of the most interesting ones on this page.

Q: Existed in the history snails with legs ?
A: Yes. It is really astonishing but true.

These snails are known as Snailegosaurus. They were present on our planet 200-300 million years ago.
How could they have legs? Good question. They could have legs because they had bones ! We should know that at that time all species of snails had bones. They got boneless just in the last 50 000 years. (See their bone structure on the picture B.)
Another interesting fact that they were predacious. A bigger group of Snailegosaurus could kill even a Mammoth. They were extremely dangerous as they had long pointed teeth and could utter a shocking roar.

Q: How old is the earliest prehistoric snail we know of ?
A: 550 million years old.

It is the Spiralosaurus. We don't know too much about it. We are sure that they hated the red color and were vegetarians. Their long neck helped them to survive for millions of years but they all died of hunger in the first Ice Age. As we mentioned above they surely had bones and this made it to be possible to have a so long neck for them. Another interesting fact that even if they had 4 brains they were not smarter than an ant.

Q: Are any prehistoric snails still living today?
A: No

Unfortunately only one species of snails survived the last Ice Age. They are known as Spirice. They successfully adapted themselves to the cold. They changed their un insulated "house" to an ice shell, in which they could stay alive even in the biggest cold. But after the ice age passed away they were not able to adapt themselves to the warm weather, and they disappeared from Earth.

Q: What is the first known "snail" story from human history ?
A: So far, as I know, it is the Trojan Snail.

Most of you has already heard about the Trojan Horse since it is in the history books. But only very few of us know about the Trojan Snail. Why? Because it wasn't a successful project like the "Horse" one. We don't know what happened exactly but the Wooden Snail was ruined before got used for the trick.

Q: Have any human army used snails during it's war operations ?
A: Yes, specially in the 2nd World War.

Let me look over the most important ones:
German War Snail:
The german army used these pitiless creatures to stop the convoys of enemy trucks. They were able to wait beside the main path of enemy's procession for months in a total unnoticeable way. And at the right moment, when they heard the noise of enemy trucks (they were able to recognize it from tens of miles) just proceeded onto the road and caused puncture.

English Secret Agent Snail:
They are my personal favorites. I could write a whole book about them. They presented the highest technical achievements of their age (1940-45) They had many miniature electronic equipments integrated into their shell and body. Just to name a few: infrared eye, radio receiver, photo machine, knife, robot arm, etc. (I'm in the progress of making an animation about how they used these things)
As they worked secretly we know only a few things about their operation. What we know: they produced 23576 useful reports during the II. World War and they saved about 458 human agents from the cruel death.

Japanese Kamikaze Snail
These secret kamikaze snails were developed to liquidate all English Secret Snail Agents who worked in Japan. You can see on the picture how they were supposed to kill. I wont explain it further as I have no strength to speak about this horrible subject. Excuse me.
